Burns to get lip injections pay-out

(Monday October 20, 2008 04:03 PM)

Singer Pete Burns will receive a pay-out from a Harley Street doctor for botched lip injections.

The Eighties pop star took legal action against surgeon Dr Maurizio Viel after suffering swelling and blisters following the treatment.

He was injected with a product called Outline Original and was not adequately warned of potential side-effects, law firm Irwin Mitchell said.

Dr Viel also failed to observe guidelines about its use in conjunction with other products, and gave an excessive number of follow-up injections.

Last week the doctor’s legal team told the High Court that he admitted the allegations, paving the way for a pay-out to Burns.

Auriana Griffiths, from firm Irwin Mitchell, said: “The barrister representing Dr Viel confirmed last week in court that the allegations of negligence set out in the original documents filed at court have been admitted.

“Further allegations have been added, with the permission of the court, relating to a lip lift procedure.

“At this stage, the investigation into the value of the case is ongoing and no figure has been agreed.”

The singer began court proceedings in January last year.

(Monday October 13, 2008 12:30 AM)

Katy Perry is to make her hosting debut at this year’s MTV Europe Music Awards.

The 23-year-old old Californian musician, whose single I Kissed A Girl celebrated more than five million worldwide sales, is nominated in two categories at this year’s event in Liverpool.

They are best new act and most addictive track.

It is the first time that the singer has acted as host at an awards ceremony, MTV said.

“Katy Perry has been one of the freshest and most successful new artists to emerge on the international music scene this year which is witnessed by her nomination in two categories in this year’s awards,” said Richard Godfrey, executive producer of this year’s event.

“We want to pursue a much more informal and relaxed role for the host at this year’s awards, but with a definite musical twist and we think Katy will be perfect.”

Thousands party at Connect festival

(Friday August 29, 2008 05:50 PM)

Thousands of music fans partied at a Scottish castle as the Hydro Connect festival got under way.

Around 15,000 campers made their way to Inveraray Castle on the banks of Loch Fyne, Argyll.

Now in its second year, the festival, billed as a “truly boutique affair”, features Franz Ferdinand, Welsh rockers The Manic Street Preachers and US experimental group Mercury Rev.

Paolo Nutini, Spiritulized, The Gossip and Icelandic band Sigur Ros are also performing at the beauty spot.

Two stages compete for attention alongside the Unknown Pleasures tent featuring appearances from Karl Bartos, of German electro pioneers Kraftwerk, and Sparks.

Organisers played up the location – around 60 miles from Glasgow – as much as the music.

Locally sourced food, including world-famous Loch Fyne oysters, is being promoted alongside a dedicated whisky tent.

Anyone hoping to escape the mud of the campsite, just yards from the Duke of Argyll’s home, can unwind at a spa offering massage and beauty treatments on site.

The former singer will appear in the first three episodes of the new show, which debuts in America and Australia next month.

Spears’ manager: Britney not performing at VMAs

(Tuesday August 26, 2008 06:08 AM)

Britney Spears has dashed hopes she’ll have a second attempt at a career comeback by taking to the MTV stage later this year for the network’s forthcoming Video Music Awards (VMAs).

The pop star shocked audiences last year with a shaky performance of her hit song Gimme More, baring her belly and stumbling across the stage.

Spears’ comeback performance at the awards show has been rumoured in recent weeks – after her hair stylist Kim Vo reported he was creating styles for the singer’s forthcoming show to E! News.

But the singer’s manager Larry Rudolph has reportedly hit back at the claims.

According to Los Angeles radio talk show host Ryan Seacrest, Rudolph has confirmed the star “is in the middle of recording her next album, which is going amazingly well, and was never supposed to perform at that show,” adding: “Britney Spears will not be performing at the VMAs this year. I’m telling you officially and unequivocally.”

But Spears’ involvement in the ceremony has not been totally scrapped – the Toxic hitmaker can be seen in a promotional video with host Russell Brand, rapper LL Cool J, and Fall Out Boy bassist Pete Wentz.

She has also secured nominations for two awards at the ceremony – Best Female and Best Pop Video categories, for her track Piece of Me.

The MTV VMAs show is set to air in the US on 7 September.

She was voted through to the next round on Saturday after singing Eva Cassidy’s Fields Of Gold.

Duffy supports illegal downloads

(Wednesday July 30, 2008 01:45 PM)
Welsh star Duffy is happy for young fans to download her music for free – as long as they buy her records when they get older.
The singer believes most people who use illegal file-sharing websites only do so because they can’t afford to buy CDs.
She says, “There are pros and cons to everything. Some people think it creates illegal access, but I think the big wheel is round, y’know?
“I think it’s got more positives because it basically gives people access, what’s the harm in that?
“Somebody asked me the other day what I thought of illegal downloading, and I thought, ‘You know what? I don’t care’, because I think the majority (of people who download) are kids and as they get old and get more income they’ll probably buy records. So it’s just making music a part of everyone’s lives.”
The U.K. government recently launched a crackdown on illegal downloading, with internet service providers planning to send warning letters to customers who access file-sharing sites.
